HACKATHON: Predicting MLS Game Outcomes using Data Science

May 6 @ 9:00 am - 9:30 am

With Philadelphia bidding for the 2026 world cup, and because of how well our own Philadelphia Union have been performing, it is an exciting time to announce that Freya Systems will be hosting a Hackathon for this year’s Philly Tech Week, titled, “Can you Predict MLS Game Outcomes?”. We intend to provide hackathon teams with publicly sourced MLS data, asking them to build a robust predictive model that accurately determines the outcomes of the games played so far in the current 2022 season.

Prize Package

Speaking of MLS, we hope you are a Philadelphia Union fan because the winning team will receive an exciting Union-related prize of sideline tickets to a game, merch, and of course, bragging rights. We are partnering with Sports Reference LLC to curate the most effective sports data for participants.

The Hackathon will start at 9 am EST on Friday, May 6th with a 30-minute virtual kick-off meeting. After registering using the link below, an email highlighting the rules and expectations will be sent, followed by an invite for the kick-off meeting. Data will be curated and cleaned for each team prior to the start.

Teams or individuals, consisting of up to four members will have until 9 am EST on Monday, May 9th to submit their final results. (More instructions to come)

After teams have submitted their final projects, a selection of impartial data scientists will review and analyze each team’s work to rank them in terms of accuracy, among other criteria. The winners will be announced on May 13th through a virtual event and via email. Prize packages will be handed out accordingly.
